The Fourth Annual
KOREAN STUDIES GRADUATE STUDENT CONFERENCE 1999

The fourth annual Korean Studies Graduate Student Conference was held on Saturday, April 24 in the Ticknor Lounge of Boylston Hall at Harvard University. This year we received a record number of abstracts and due to the sharp increase in the number of applicants the selection process was arduous and there were quite a number of abstracts we had the difficult task of declining. In the end twelve presenters were invited and they hailed from an impressive number of institutions including Harvard University, Cambridge University, Monterey Institute of International Studies, University of Dublin, University of Pennsylvania, Oxford University, Wayne State University, and University of Texas - Austin. The four panels -- International History, Literature and Translation, Premodern Korea, and Cultural History -- were chaired by Harvard professors Carter J. Eckert, David R. McCann, and Milan Hejtmanek, and Professor Nak-Chung Paik of Seoul National University. The conference schedule as well as abstracts can be found on-line on the Korea Institute homepage.

This year the conference was organized by Tae Yang Kwak with the help of Jiwon Shin, Christy Choi, and many others. We are confident that the annual Korean Studies Graduate Student Conference will continue to grow and continue to serve as a valuable forum for young Korean Studies scholars. Next year's conference will be held at Harvard University in mid-April 2000. Those interested in applying should send a one page abstract to the Korea Institute by the end of February 2000. Further details will be posted on-line.
