About International & Global History at Harvard

Research and teaching in international & global history is a major professional commitment of a number of faculty members and graduate students at the Harvard History Department.

The study of international & global history is concerned with historical phenomena and relationships that cross or transcend the national and regional boundaries that typically define the study of history. The practice of international & global history has a long and distinguished tradition. It is, however, becoming all the more significant in the current age of globalization, as our growing awareness of the significance of global and transnational processes, interactions, and entities is increasingly reflected in our view of the past.

The study of international & global history at Harvard includes the concerns of "classic" diplomatic history, but it also encompasses such topics as international economic developments, the role of NGOs and other transnational bodies, the movements of people, commodities, or germs, and the transnational diffusion of ideas, ideologies, norms, and cultural images or practices.
