The Joseph Fletcher Memorial Lecture

Twenty-two years have passed since the death of EALC professor Joseph Fletcher (1934-1984). During that time, owing to greater access to original materials in archives and libraries and increased opportunities for field research, the areas in Inner Asian studies in which Fletcher worked -- Xinjiang and the connections between the Islamic and Chinese worlds, Manchu studies, Mongolistics -- have developed in new and significant directions. Yet as a review of this new work reveals, Fletcher's comparative method, as well as his main hypotheses (few of which he was able to fully develop himself), were remarkably ahead of their time. His scholarship remains fresh and relevant still today, and his influence and ideas have spread around the world. (more>>)

One of the doyennes of Inner Asian studies, Françoise Aubin is Research Director Emerita at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and at the Centre for International Studies and Research of the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques. A specialist on China, Mongolia and Islam with a particular interest in cultural and institutional history in the Far East and Central Asia, in a career lasting over five decades Aubin has earned worldwide recognition for her scholarship in a range of subjects, including especially Yuan studies, Mongolian studies, and Central Asian Islam.
