Medieval/Early Modern Latin Research Group
Coordinators: Marco Viniegra and Justin Grosslight

Department Calendar

The Medieval Early Modem Latin Research Group meets weekly with the intention of gathering together graduate students, faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting scholars for a thought-provoking interaction and discussion with each other. Graduate students from the HS department take care of the organization of the Latin Research Group, with consultation and support from faculty members. The purpose of the Latin Research Group - is to be an interdisciplinary forum where graduate students can give short presentations on their research, and offer a representative text for us all to read. In this way, we all have an opportunity to practice our Latin, and we all can help the presenter out by discussing the various research sources we all encounter, as well as some ideas on how to develop our research further. An additional advantage of the Latin Research Group is the fact that it offers a continuous space for the further development of the Latin language through discussion and interaction among people who find themselves working with Latin sources quite constantly. This point is highlighted by the fact that students assisting to the Latin Research Group are exposed to sources outside the scope of those studied at the Medieval Latin Seminar, which gives us all the opportunity to increase our abilities in doing research on the Early Modem period.

Since the Latin Research Group includes graduate students whose level of mastering of the Latin language varies, it also gives an opportunity for improvement not only of the Latin language itself, but also of the experience of doing research in original sources. Therefore, the Group offers a place for professional training, since it implies the further development of a very important skill necessary for research in a professional level. The Latin Research Group's membership has grown over the last year significantly, and the Group has expanded to meet nearly every week. The group format allows some presentations to extend over more than one week, so that students can discuss some research issues and texts in greater depth.
