Dissertation Working Group
Coordinators: Marco Viniegra and Katja Guenther
The Dissertation Working Group (DAWGS) is the only working group in the Department of the History of Science wherein graduate students can present their work-¬in-progress to their peers. Students at all points in their graduate school trajectory are welcome to attend and present. The working group is a forum for students to present drafts of the dissertation prospectus, draft chapters of the dissertation, drafts of articles for publication, and also to give practice conference and job talks. In addition to discussing and critiquing student work, the working group is also an important venue for professional development. In the past, we have had presentations from faculty, graduate students, and Bok Center advisors on topics such as writing a curriculum vitae, how to assess the job market, how to prepare for job interviews, how to get scholarly work published, and effective strategies for studying for the qualifying examinations. It is a lively, well-attended working group, with at least 10 students at each meeting, and it serves an important function as a place where graduate students can feel free to ask for help with writing and presentation, without the pressure of doing so in front of faculty, advisors, or prominent visiting scholars.
