Intercollegiate Men's Choruses

IMC at Harvard

The 2004 National Seminar - Harvard University March 11-13

The Harvard Glee Club is pleased to host the 2004 National Seminar of the Intercollegiate Men's Choruses. The seminar promises to be an exciting event, with 15 choruses performing in five concerts in Sanders Theatre, seminars led by musicians, conductors, publishers, and a special group of composers, and a general spirit of camaraderie and brotherhood culminating in a banquet on Saturday evening.

We will host five concerts in Sanders Theatre: Thursday night, Friday afternoon and evening, and Saturday afternoon and evening. Two high school glee clubs, a boys choir, an ensemble of mixed men and boys, eight college glee clubs, two adult choirs, and a professional chamber ensemble, make up the diverse, talented group of singers that will be featured at our Festival of Male Choruses. For more information about the performing groups and concert schedule, please click on the link above.

We will also host eight Seminars for Conductors. We welcome Carol Barnett, Steven Sametz, and Charles Fussell, three composers who have written new works for the Harvard Glee Club, as special guests for our seminars. They will lead a seminar on the composition process as well as join with publishers and conductors in sharing mutual concerns about finding good male choral repertoire. IMC seminars will explore diverse subjects, some of which are: Georgian music, intervals and expressivity, expanding financial resources, building repertoire, and fostering choral community. We especially look forward to the workshop presented by Cantus, a professional chamber ensemble.

Student representatives of IMC member choruses are warmly welcomed and encouraged to attend. Your students will hear 15 gifted male choruses, will listen to diverse repertoire, will sight-read through new publications, and will have the opportunity to attend several Conductors' Seminars. They will also participate in four Student Seminars, led by representatives of participating choruses, addressing topics such as management, tour planning, alumni relations, recruitment, and institutional memory.

The IMC National Seminar offers all of us a rare opportunity to experience together a community of kindred spirits, inspired by our common love for male chorus singing. The members of the Harvard Glee Club hope that you will join us for the IMC National Seminar this March 11, 12, and 13!
