GRADUATE ADVISING

Ordinarily, the Director of Graduate Studies is a student's primary adviser for the first two years of graduate study. Should additional advising be desired, it should be sought in consultation and agreement with the Director of Graduate Studies. At the end of the second year, a primary adviser will be determined by the faculty in consultation with the student.

THESIS ADVISING AFTER RETIREMENT OR TERMINATION OF EMPLOYMENT

If the professor and student agree, already-designated thesis adviser(s), primary and secondary and chair/members of the generals committee, will remain in place upon the retirement or departure of a given faculty member. If a new committee, or a shift in primary or secondary roles is requested or becomes necessary, the suggested revision of the committee should be submitted in written form to the Director of Graduate Studies for faculty consideration and approval. Normally, the faculty member in residence, although secondary thesis adviser or generals committee member, will handle the administrative duties associated with the task at hand. One of the advisers must always be an active/resident faculty member.
