RESEARCH AND WRITING FELLOWSHIPS

Travel for dissertation research is often required of History of Art and Architecture graduate students. Many sources of support are available from within the university as well as from outside. University traveling fellowships include the Sheldon, Kennedy, Knox and Lurcy among others. These are awarded competitively throughout the University. Outside sources vary greatly according to the fields of concentration, and may include Fulbright, National Gallery, and Kress Foundation. Students are strongly advised to inform themselves and to exert personal initiative to secure support from as many sources as possible. In the past the Department has been able to allocate a limited amount of its restricted funds to those students who have not received outside support. Because of limited departmental resources, the Department considers that all sources of funding for fellowships constitute a single source. Therefore, the Departmental Norton and the Harvard Kennedy, Knox, Sheldon, and Lurcy Fellowships are considered one source of funding. Previous receipt of the Norton means future ineligibility for the Harvard Fellowships and vice versa. National Gallery and Kress Institutional Fellowships are generally applied for at a later stage. The Department expects that all students intending to travel will apply for outside funds and as incentive to do so, the department gives priority in the allocation of University funds to those who applied for outside grants but were unsuccessful.

A Standing Committee on Fellowships will review all applications requiring departmental nomination and make its recommendation to the faculty.

MUSEUM INTERNSHIPS AND FELLOWSHIPS

Through the generosity of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Art Museum will offer a fellowship and internship. Details are available in late winter and the application deadline is usually in April.

Curatorial departments of the Harvard University Art Museums offer opportunities for part-time employment. Many students serve as curatorial assistants, and help arrange gallery exhibits, assisting the public in gaining access to collections and conducting research on objects in the collections. These positions are administered by the Museums.

Its use is restricted to faculty-led classes traveling to museums, sites, buildings, etc. as appropriate to the class. Classes of regular and visiting faculty are eligible; teaching fellows (unless the entire class is traveling) and graduate-student instructors are not eligible. Faculty are limited to one grant per academic year. Application deadline is April 1 for consideration for the next academic year.

How do I order an official GSAS transcript?
The Transcript Office is open for business Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m. at 20 Garden Street. Requests must be made either in writing or in person, not by telephone or e-mail. The first transcript ever ordered is issued without charge. Thereafter, when a transcript is ordered, the charge is $3 for the first and $2 for each additional one per request. Cash or personal checks made payable to Harvard University are accepted. Charges may not be added to the student's term bill. All transcripts are produced as "official" documents. This means they bear the Registrar's signature and University seal. If the envelope is requested to be "signed and sealed," please request this when placing the order. The normal processing time for transcripts is two to three business days. Once processed, transcripts may not be returned for refunds. When requesting by mail, please include signature, check or money order, years of attendance, degree program, and mailing address. A picture I.D. is required to pick up a transcript in person.
