- current research: encyclopedias (classifications of knowledge, reference works...) In early modern Europe (1450 - 1750)
- broader fields: French history and literature, especially early modern (i.e., 1450-1800); history of the book and of reading (printing, book trade, etc.); history of science; science and religion
- Recent publications include: The Theater of Nature: Jean Bodin and Renaissance Science (Princeton University Press, 1997); "Mosaic Physics and the Search for a Pious Natural Philosophy in the late Renaissance" Isis (2000); "Authorship in the Popular ‘Problemata Aristotels'" Early Science and Medicine (1999).
