The digitization of history project was started in May 2007 by a group of graduate students, faculty, and visiting faculty at the University of Cambridge, and is supported by the Center for History and Economics at Harvard University and at King's College Cambridge. It seeks to encourage discussion of the consequences of new uses of information for historians, and to explore new ways of increasing access to archives and other sources of information.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'

From Edgar Allen Poe, “The Raven” (1845)
