As the major internal funder of Harvard research related to China, the Harvard China Fund administers the Harvard China Faculty Grant Program to advance the research goals of Harvard faculty and improve the education of Harvard students, in collaboration with Chinese partners. The Fund also provides course development grants to faculty in order to support summer research in China leading to the creation of new courses with a focus on China.

For the FY’13 grant cycle, we especially encourage proposals focused on public health.
Preference will be given to proposed projects for which funding might not be otherwise available from traditional sources. Proposals are judged partially or fully on the following criteria:

   • Academic excellence and benefit to or involvement of Harvard students
   • Feasibility, innovation and interdisciplinary nature
   • Organizational support (both from Harvard and from Chinese universities and relevant institutions)
   • Potential for impact in China

Since 2007, the Harvard China Fund has awarded grants totaling over $2 million to 20 recipients from across the University. A sampling of research projects includes: disability law and rights; civil society and nonprofit organizations; crisis management research and training; seismic hazard assessment; economic growth and air pollution control; water purification systems; medical training; insurance access; medical Mandarin; health systems reform; mental health stigma; social injustice; moral and civic engagement; humanities education; village development; landscape and ecological urbanism; archaeology; and cataloguing of local histories.

Application Details
Proposals for both the research and course development grants are reviewed by the Harvard China Fund Steering Committee (comprised of 14 scholars from 10 of the University’s schools). Final proposals are subject to external peer review. The grant competition is open to full-time Harvard faculty at the assistant, associate or full professorial rank. Projects may include other researchers or participants, but these individuals or teams may not serve as the principal applicant.

Deadlines
Applicants interested in submitting proposals should e-mail a one-page abstract including a list of key participants and one-page preliminary budget to jdowning@fas.harvard.edu by May 14, 2012. Following a review of the proposed projects, finalists will be asked to submit a formal proposal by September 3, 2012. Final decisions will be announced by November 16, 2012.
