CULTURAL RHYTHMS | A Celebration Every February, the Cultural Rhythms cultural show and food festival celebrates Harvard's rich cultural and ethnic diversity by showcasing the talents of over 20 student organizations. The students and faculty of the Harvard Foundation nominate annually an outstanding American artist as Cultural Artist of the Year to serve as emcee of the cultural show. Honored cultured artists in the past years have included Phylicia Rashad, Andy Garcia, Graham Greene, Queen Latifah, Jimmy Smits, Debbie Allen, Ruben Blades, Danny Aiello, Denzel Washington, and Halle Berry. Each year over 1,000 students attend this day-long celebration.
This annual science conference, held in April, is designed to encourage students to pursue careers in academic sciences. Each year, the students and faculty of the Harvard Foundation host a college-wide, two-day conference, "Albert Einstein Science Conference: Advancing Minorities and Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics." The conference brings together members of Harvard's distinguished science faculty and students from Harvard College, as well as students from other colleges and area high schools. Previous honorary guests of the conference have included Dr. Dudley Hershbach, Nobel Laureate in chemistry; Dr. Walter Massey, Director of the National Science Foundation; Mr. Jaime Escalante, teacher; and Dr. Mae Jemison, astronaut.
Initiated in the spring of 1996, the Film Festival is one of the Foundation's newer traditions. Sponsored by the Student Advisory Committee, the Film Festival features two to three weeks of film showings in co-sponsorship with several student organizations. The films explore a variety of issues facing different cultures, ranging from guerrilla warfare in Nicaragua to race/color issues in Iran. Films are free of charge in order to encourage student participation. |
SPEAKER SERIES The Foundation sponsors an ongoing panel discussion/lecture series that brings distinguished figures of national and international significance to the Harvard College houses. Recent distinguished guests of the Foundation include human rights advocates Dr. Harry S. Wu and Dr. Nawal El-Saadawi; Nobel Peace Prize winners Professor Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel, and Dr. Jose Ramos-Horta; former U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros Ghali; Dr. David Ho, AIDS researcher; Wilma Mankiller, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation; and current U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan.
For the past 20 years, the Director of the Harvard Foundation and the Dean of Harvard College have presented Harvard Foundation Awards to the students who have made significant contributions to intercultural and interracial understanding and harmony at Harvard College. These awards are officially presented at the Annual David Aloian Memorial Dinner which takes place in Quincy House Dining Hall near the end of the spring semester of each academic year.
