An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies is pleased to announce the 2010–2011 competition for the An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowship to support research in Chinese Studies. Well-designed projects at any stage, from initial research to revision for publication, are welcome.

Research topics can cover any period of Chinese history or contemporary China and involve any academic discipline. Applicants in pre-modern humanities are encouraged to apply, as are applicants in contemporary social sciences. Priority will be given to those candidates who have had no previous postdoctoral fellowships.

An Wang Postdoctoral Fellows will be expected to teach one course in coordination with a relevant department at Harvard University. Please include with your application materials a description of potential courses you would be able to teach. Finalists will be required to submit a syllabus for their proposed course(s).

Candidates must be able to provide evidence of successful completion of their PhD degree by June 1, 2010, and may not be more than five years beyond receipt of the PhD. Harvard University PhD recipients are not eligible for this fellowship. Applicants who are not native speakers of English must include the date and score of the most recent TOEFL examination or other evidence of proficiency in English (such as a letter from an academic advisor or a degree from a US university).

The Center invites An Wang Postdoctoral Fellows to submit completed manuscripts to the publications program of the Harvard University Asia Center and to discuss publication ideas with the editor of the program while in at the Fairbank Center. Fellows are expected to reside in the Cambridge vicinity during the time of their award and to actively participate in the events and the intellectual life of the Center. Fellows are expected to contribute to the greater Harvard community by teaching, mentoring, or advising students.

Application deadline: February 1, 2010. Your application packet must include an original signed application form, an updated curriculum vitae, and a five-page double-spaced plan of research and writing for the year of appointment. Two letters of reference should be mailed directly to the Fairbank Center. Submitting a writing sample, such as a dissertation chapter, is strongly encouraged.

Total stipend for one year: $45,000.

Princeton-Harvard China and the World Program

The Princeton-Harvard China and the World Program (PHCWP) was launched in 2005. The purpose is to train scholars to integrate the advanced study of China’s foreign relations into the field of international relations (IR) by bringing together exceptional young scholars from broader fields such as comparative foreign policy, security studies, and international relations theory.

Among the institutions that helped to found this new program were: at Princeton University, the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs East Asian Studies Program, and the Institute for International and Regional Studies; at Harvard University, the Center for International Affairs, the Olin Institute for Strategic Studies, and the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies.

The postdoctoral fellowships offered provide an opportunity for scholars to concentrate on their research on China’s international relations as well as to build a stronger sense of community among scholars in the field. Fellows are expected to be in residence at either Harvard or Princeton, and to participate in seminars and conferences on topics related to their scholarly interests.
