William
C. Kirby
Director
William C. Kirby is T. M. Chang Professor of China Studies at Harvard University and Spangler Family Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. He is a Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor. He serves as Director of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and Chairman of the Harvard China Fund.
A historian of modern China, Professor Kirby’s work examines China's business, economic, and political development in an international context. He has written on the evolution of modern Chinese business (state-owned and private); Chinese corporate law and company structure; the history of freedom in China; the international socialist economy of the 1950s; relations across the Taiwan Strait; and China’s relations with Europe and America. His current projects include case studies of contemporary Chinese businesses and a comparative study of higher education in China and the United States.
He is Honorary Visiting Professor at Peking University, Nanjing University, Chongqing University, and Fudan University. He has held appointments also as Visiting Professor at the University of Heidelberg and the Free University of Berlin. Before coming to Harvard in 1992, he was Professor of History, Director of Asian Studies, and Dean of University College at Washington University in St. Louis. At Harvard, he has served as Chair of the History Department, Director of the Asia Center, and most recently, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
As Dean of Harvard's largest school from 2002 to 2006, he initiated major reforms in undergraduate education in Harvard College; enhanced Harvard's international studies at home and abroad; increased substantially financial aid in the College and in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; supported the growth of the Division (now School) of Engineering and Applied Sciences; and oversaw the construction of major new buildings in the Life Sciences, Engineering, and the Arts. During his tenure the Faculty expanded at its most rapid rate since the 1960s.
Professor Kirby holds degrees from Dartmouth College, Harvard University, and (Dr. Phil. Honoris Causa) the Free University of Berlin. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Lydia Chen holds an MA in Asian studies and MJ in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley where she produced a short video documentary titled Inner Visions: Avant-Garde Art in China. Her BA is from Sarah Lawerence College. She grew up in the United States and first went to China in 1981 as a part-time tour guide. She then lived in Beijing in the mid-1980s, working at the Foreign Languages Press and studying at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. She returned to Beijing from 1997 to 2003 and worked at the Beijing Lufthansa Center, the American Chamber of Commerce in China, and the International School of Beijing. Lydia joined Harvard in 2008, after five years at Stanford University. |

Kluz

Linda Kluz brings many years of Harvard administrative experience to the Fairbank Center. She previously worked at the Harvard Negotiation Project and the Radcliffe Institute for Public Policy. Before Harvard, she worked in the publishing field as a production editor. Linda is particularly interested in creating a healthy workplace where all employees can work to their full potential, and she is a board member in the employees' union. |

Wendy Duan

Wendy received her BA from an architectural school in Harbin, China. She came to the United States in 1996. Before joining the Fairbank Center in fall 2009, she worked as curatorial assistant at the Harvard University Herbaria and staff assistant at the Arnold Arboretum. She is a really active person and enjoys outdoor sports like skydiving and white water rafting. |

Wen-hao Tien holds a master’s degree in public health from Columbia University and worked at major medical centers in New York City before coming to Harvard. Since joining the Fairbank Center in 1998, she has developed a keen interest in contemporary Chinese art. She is a strong supporter of art in the academic environment. She also gives workshops on Chinese art and culture to young people at schools and museums. |

Nancy Hearst

Nancy Hearst is the librarian in the Fairbank Collection of the H.C. Fung Library. She makes periodic trips to China/Hong Kong to select new acquisitions. She also does free-lance editing and proofreading for China-related books, and English polishing for a number of state and party organizations in Beijing. Nancy has worked at Harvard for a long time. |

Ying-Ming Lee has been working at the Fairbank Center Library since 1998 after several years of library work at Harvard Yenching Library. Prior to joining Harvard, she was a homemaker and raised two daughters. She has a BA in history from the Chinese Cultural University in Taiwan. She took courses at the University of Hawaii while she and family lived in Hawaii in early 1980s. She enjoys contemporary Chinese literature, classical music, flower arrangement, cooking, and mountain hiking. |

Susan McHone

Susan Mchone became the director of finance and administration for the Asia-related research centers in 2000. Prior to this, she reviewed and processed grant awards for the sponsored research office at Harvard. Susan received her MBA from Simmons College of Management and her BA in history from the University of Massachusetts at Boston. Her career includes many years managing Woolworth stores in New England, and several years as administrator for a small research group affiliated with Harvard. Her wide range of personal interests include travel, reading, cooking, knitting, tennis, and her house, which was built in 1890 and requires constant attention, inside and out. |

Karen Christopher has worked in the Asia Center’s financial office since February 2000, assisting staff, affiliates, faculty, and students with financial and administrative issues. While the Fairbank Center is her first priority she also supports the other Asia-related research centers. Before Karen came to the Fairbank Center she worked at Harvard’s central payroll office as well as the Harvard Institute for International Development. Karen has worked at Harvard University since May 1997. |

Kelly Maccioli has a BFA in graphic design and has been working in the field for six years, both in full time positions and as a freelance designer. Prior to coming to Harvard, she worked as a production artist and then as a designer at a local print and design company. She has a particular interest in photography and can be seen photographing events here at the Fairbank Center. Kelly also teaches dance classes at a local studio during the school year and enjoys reading in her spare time. |
