Hsuan-Ying Huang will be conducting field research for his dissertation, “Psychotherapy: the Emergence of an ‘Informal Mental Health System’ in Contemporary Urban China.” In a yearlong ethnographic study in Beijing, he will follow an emergent cohort of therapists and participate in their training and daily practices. He investigates the explosion of interest in psychotherapy and counseling in urban China to understand issues of subjectivity and changing qualities of individualism in China today. He is advised by Arthur Kleinman, Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology, Professor of Medical Anthropology, and Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard University.

Max Hirsh will spend one year in Hong Kong to pursue research on his dissertation, “Airport Urbanism: Localizing the Global Hub.” Taking airport hubs as a useful lens for investigating the practical effects of globalization on contemporary cities, he will focus on the non-aviation purposes of Hong Kong’s airport. He highlights the continuing influence of local socioeconomic factors and cultural norms on urban development and  interrogates the extent to which Hong Kong’s urban development strategies mediate between local, regional, and global priorities. During his research year, he will be affiliated with the Faculty of Architecture, The University of Hong Kong. He is advised by Antoine Picon, Professor of the History of Architecture and Technology, Harvard Design School.
