2008-2009 Competition Announcement

The Fairbank Center for East Asian Research is pleased to announce the 2008–2009 competition for the An Wang Post-doctoral Fellowship to support research in Chinese Studies. Well-designed projects at any stage, from initial research to revision for publication, are welcome. Priority will be given to those candidates who have had no previous post-doctoral fellowships. Those who have received their Ph.D. from Harvard University are normally not considered for this fellowship. Candidates must be able to provide evidence of successful completion of their Ph.D. degree by June 1, 2008, and may not be more than five years beyond receipt of the Ph.D. Applicants who are not native speakers of English must include with their application the date and score of the most recent TOEFL examination and other evidence of proficiency in English (such as a letter from an academic advisor).

As an An Wang Fellow, you may offer the book manuscript that results from your work at the Fairbank Center to any publisher. However, the Center invites you to consider submitting it to the Publications Program of the Harvard University Asia Center and to discuss the possibility of publication with the editor of the Program during your stay in Cambridge.

Fellows are expected to be resident at the Fairbank Center during the time of their award. Fellows are expected to actively participate in the events and the intellectual life of the Fairbank Center during the time of their award. It is hoped that Fellows will also contribute to the greater Harvard community, possibly by teaching, mentoring or advising students. The Fairbank center will present these opportunities to each Fellow and a mutual decision will be reached.

Up to four fellowships will be offered for the coming year.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:   1 February 2008. Your application packet must include an original signed application form, an updated curriculum vitae, and a 5-page double-spaced plan of research and writing for the year of appointment. Two letters of reference should be mailed directly to the Fairbank Center. Including a chapter of your dissertation or another writing sample is strongly encouraged.

TOTAL STIPEND FOR ONE YEAR:   $40,000.
