China Gender Studies Workshop
In both Chinese and American popular culture, sports have captured the global images of male youth popular culture. In particular, the growth of the popular culture of sports in China suggests a reversal of Sherry Ortner’s classic model of a gendered hierarchy, where ideas of masculinity are tightly linked to the athletic male body, making men closer to nature. This talk will explore possible linkages between the spread of a cultural ideology that valorizes the athletic male and the development of capitalism with Chinese characteristics. Eriberto P. Lozada Jr. is associate professor of anthropology and director, Asian Studies, Davidson College, North Carolina. He is a sociocultural anthropologist who has explored contemporary issues in Chinese society ranging from religion and politics, popular culture and globalization, sports and society issues, and the cultural impact of science and technology. His current research examines Chinese economic development in West Africa. Location: CGIS South, Room S153
