Affiliation
Associates in Research
The Center has an active group of affiliates including
about 120 Associates in Research, who are based in Boston,
New England or New York and travel to Cambridge to use
Center resources and participate in activities. The work
of our affiliates covers a wide range of fields, including
anthropology, religion, political science, economics,
history and literature. Together they create a lively
community that encourages interdisciplinary contact.
The Fairbank Center provides no funding for its affiliates,
but is able to offer limited office space. Center affiliation
also includes access to Widener Library, the Harvard-Yenching
Library, and the Fairbank Center Library. Our affiliates
are active participants not only in Center seminars and
activities, but also in programs in the broader University
community, including student-organized events. The application
form is available to the right. Current

Visiting Scholars, Fellows, and Associates
The Fairbank Center hosts about 20 visiting scholars
from universities or research institutes throughout China,
Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and Europe every year. Visiting
Scholar status is intended only for senior scholars who
wish to come to Harvard to pursue independent research.
The Center is unable to provide funding for visiting
scholars, who need to secure their own funding before
acceptance.

Applications
In view of the increasing number of requests for affiliation,
we have decided to group the applicants and have decisions
twice a year. The Executive Committee will announce its
decisions for both Associates in Research and Visiting
Scholars within one month after the following annual
deadlines: April 15 and October
15.
The intellectual life of the Center is greatly enriched
by the active participation of its affiliates. Ordinarily,
Center affiliates are expected to be involved in a clearly
defined research project that draws upon Center and university
resources, and to participate actively in Center colloquia
and seminars. They are also expected to be in residence
in the greater Boston area during the period of affiliation.
