Discovery of A Three Story Subterranean Storage

Last June, Jungwon [Chungwon] Munhwajae Yŏn'guwon (Jungwon [Chungwon] Cultural Properties Institute, www.jungwon.re.kr ) archaeologists discovered a three story subterranean storage reinforced with wood frames and outer walls at a Komo Sansŏng fortress site, Munkyŏng, Kyŏngsang Pukto province. The surprisingly well preserved structure is estimated to be built bu Silla in the mid-fifth century or earlier based on the analysis of the archaeological assembly unearthed there. In particular, they found a bronze bowl inscribed “沙伐女 上” (Sabŏllyŏ sang), of which “沙伐” ( Sabŏl) is the name of a province that Silla established in present northern Kyŏngsang Pukto province, according to Samguk sagi , during King Ch'ŏmhae's reign (247-261 C.E.). The size of the structure is 12.3m (N-S) by 6.6-6.9m (E-W) and its height is 4.5m (lower 1.4m, middle 1m, upper 2.1m). Several other underground storages of similarity have been excavated so far within Paekche's territory but it is the first discovery in Silla's.
