Lines of Stakes in Ulsan: Remains of Ancien
t Harbor?
The Center for Archaeological Study at the Ulsan Development Institute unearthed lines of wood stakes at Pan'gu-dong, Ulsan , together with artifacts ranging from Tang Chinese ceramics and Unified Silla roof tiles to Chosŏn woodblocks. The stakes are about 15cm in diameter, and are thought to be parts of a wooden fence for defending interior facilities. They are arranged in two rows of approximately 30m. They were erected in a ditch aspproximately 40cm wide and 30cm deep. Though the radiocarbon dating for the stakes is still in progress, the archaeologists think that the stakes were built as harbor defensive equipment during the Unified Silla period, analyzing the sequential relationship between overlapping remains. Similar stakes were also discovered at Changdo site, Wnado Island -the famous Ch'ŏnghae garrison of Chang Pogo.
