Determine the volunteer opportunities best suited for you
United Way of Massachusetts Bay pinpoints 4 key questions in determining what kinds of volunteer opportunities are best suited for you in Simple Things You Can Do to Make a Difference in Greater Boston (1996):
1. Which social issues are most important to you?

How near do you like to be to the person in need? Do you want to help from a distance (giving financial support, working at an agency, collecting clothes for a shelter) or eye-to-eye (working one-on-one as a tutor or counselor, teaching a class)?
Do you want to help by yourself or with a group of others?
How much time do you want to spend helping? Once a week (develop close bond with others)? Once a month? One-shot volunteer opportunities?
4. Who do you want to help?
Do you want to work with children or adults? Babies, teens, young parents, the elderly? Women or men? Refugees? Immigrants?
