Q: What do the nose flute, heckelphone, sackbut, bazooka, crwth, tromboon, and dill piccolo have in common?
A: They are all musical instruments that have NOT YET been played in the Dudley House Traditional Music Ensemble. The harp, fiddle, tabla, mandolin, overtone flute, Altoid flute (minty fresh), guitar, electric bass, accordion, bass clarinet, treble viol, cunbus, and recorder, on the other hand, are among the instruments that have at one time or another formed the unmistakable DTME sound.
Who are we?
The Traditional Music Ensemble is a small group of musicians dedicated to learning and performing music from around the world, with a primary focus on European and American folk traditions. No experience with traditional music is necessary to join, but those members who have knowledge of music of a specific culture have the opportunity to teach tunes and have them performed at the end-of-semester concerts.
When and where are we?
The ensemble meets on Tuesdays from 7pm to 9:30pm in the Dudley House Fireside Room.
Where is the sheet music?
We learn tunes entirely by ear, and highly recommend that ensemble members bring recording devices to rehearsals so that they can practice at home.
Where do I sign up?
Call Petra Gelbart at 617-497-8771 or e-mail her at pgelbart@fas.harvard.edu to indicate interest.
How can I relieve my crushing boredom if I don't play an instrument?
Our winter concert will be held on Saturday, December 18th 2004 in the Dudley House Dining Room. You'll just have to wait until then. In the meantime why not try your hand at martial arts or maybe alcoholism?
I demand to be entertained now!
All right, keep your shirt on. Here's a stirring rendition of Jeremy Wilmer's Ode to Conant from the ensemble's debut concert in December 2002. Performers include Jeremy Wilmer (fiddle), Myke Cuthbert (clarinet), David Kaminsky (flute), Balkiz Ozturk (voice), Catherine Owuor (voice), and Petra Safarova (voice).
