Edward Everett and the American Lyceum Movement: A Lecture

Tuesday, February 23, 5:00pm, Meet in Dudley House, Main Lobby

Join us for a lecture by Northeastern University professor and writer Richard Katula. The author of The Eloquence of Edward Everett: America's Greatest Orator, Prof. Katula will discuss the role of the lecture and lyceum movement in the years before the U.S. Civil War. Hosted by the Massachusetts Historical Society at 1154 Boylston Street in Boston. We'll meet at Dudley House and take the #1 bus to the lecture. A Literary Tour of the Mt. Auburn Cemetery

Saturday, April 17, 11:30am, Meet in Dudley House, Main Lobby

Join us for a special tour of the beautiful Mt. Auburn Cemetery, led by docent and Dudley House Administrator Susan Zawalich. We'll meet at Dudley at 11:30am and then walk or take the bus to the cemetery, right down the road in Cambridge. Famous literary figures buried at Mt. Auburn include Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Oliver Wendell Holmes! Learn all about these fascinating figures and enjoy the gorgeous springtime scenery. This is a free event, and all are welcome.

Sherlock Holmes Film Night

Tuesday, February 2, 7pm, Graduate Student Lounge (2nd floor, Dudley House)

The Dudley House Literary Program, together with the Intellectual/Cultural Program, hosts a special evening of Sherlock Holmes films to go along with our January Book Club event. Join us for an evening of fun. There will be door prizes, plus snacks and refreshments (including, in true Holmesian style, sherry). All are welcome.

 

The 2009 Literary Launch Party

Friday, September 4, 8-10pm, Dudley Library (3rd floor, Dudley House)

The Dudley House Literary Program hosts its annual launch party! Come find out about this year's events, or propose your own! At the launch party we will debut the 2008–2009 issue of the The Dudley Review. We will celebrate the winning entries in last year's prize contest and invite contributors and other guests at the party to read from their work. Free copies of the Review will be available.

 

An Evening of Crossword Puzzles

Join us for a presentation and workshop with accomplished crossword puzzle constructor Will Johnston. Mr. Johnston's work is regularly published in such papers as the New York Times, and this will be his second visit to Dudley House. Don't miss it: not every day can you try to construct your own crossword with an expert on hand for advice! Light refreshments will be served. Literary Tour of the Longfellow House

Sunday, Oct. 4, 10:00am, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Natl. Historic Site

Join the Dudley Literary Program for a FREE guided tour of the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow House, just down the street from Harvard's campus on historic Brattle Street. We'll explore the literary aspects of the longtime home of one of America's most beloved writers. Tickets (at no cost) will be available in the Dudley House office (3rd floor) beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8. You must pick up a ticket in order to reserve a spot!
