Put these dates in your diary as you won't want to miss them!
Thursday, October 22: IC Forum: Topic TBA (GSL), 7pm.
Featuring two or more speakers from various walks of life, this is your chance to engage in interdisciplinary conversation with your fellow students on hot topics, current affairs and controversial debates. We expect this event to be busy, so do come on time! Beverages will be served. Questions? Contact Anouska (abhattac@fas) or Esra (egsahin@fas) for more information.
Monday, November 9: SCR Dinner. Reception 5:30 p.m. (GSL); Dinner 6 p.m. (Common Room).
Please join us for an inspiring evening with renowned economist Robert C. Merton. Robert Merton is currently the John and Natty McArthur University Professor at the Harvard Business School. After receiving a Ph.D. in Economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970, he served on the finance faculty of MIT's Sloan School of Management until 1988 when he moved to Harvard. Professor Merton is past President of the American Finance Association, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received the Nobel Prize in the Economic Sciences in 1997. Sign up for your tickets in the Dudley House office; students on the Longwood Campus may call 617-495-2255 to arrange for tickets. Intellectual and Cultural Events: 2009-2010
Are you interested in interdisciplinary conversations? Do you want to meet academic celebrities? Do you like wine tastings? Do you love foreign movies? Ever wanted to learn a different language? How do you feel about a free evening of dinner, music and dancing?
If you answered positively to any of the above, come to Intellectual/Cultural events run by Dudley House IC Fellows. This year we will be running a wide selection of events to suit everyone's intellectual and cultural needs.
Regular events include:
- Senior Common Room (SCR) Dinners: these events provide distinguished members of the Harvard and Boston community with an opportunity to share their knowledge and expertise with graduate students and other House members. Typically the dinners take place on the first Monday of each month at 6pm. Watch out for SCR Dinner announcements and sign up for (free) tickets at the Dudley House office on the 3 rd floor of Lehman Hall.
- IC Forum: these events provide Harvard graduate students and other House members with an informal setting in which to discuss a wide variety of interdisciplinary issues with speakers from all walks of life, within and outside of academia. Two or more distinguished speakers present their ideas, followed by questions and lively discussion of the topics at hand.
- International Movie Night: after the success of our Indian Film series last year, we are expanding IC Movie Nights to include films from all over the world. Japanese anime, Scandinavian indie films, Bollywood, Brazilian cinema, colonial francophone films, classic world cinema… the list goes on. As always, popcorn and refreshments will be provided.
- One Night In…: Be transported to a country far far away. Twice a semester, taste the food, hear the music and experience the culture of a nation you may only have heard of. Learn the history, listen to the language, and above all have fun! Free tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, so make sure you read weekly Dudley announcements.
- Language Tables: Want to practice a foreign language or speak your native one? Join the Language Tables at Dudley House. Language Tables meet informally once a week, arranged by students themselves. Languages range from Chinese to English to Turkish, and all levels are welcome. Look for the Language Table Mixer at the beginning of semester, or check the IC page on Dudley House's website.
