The Sweet Mother Tour

The founders of the Sweet Mother Tour (SMT) recognize that no society can develop without an understanding of its own worth. We believe that cultural empowerment is a crucial ingredient to the successful political and economic development of any society - for too long the media has portrayed Africa and African people in a light that belies the true beauty and power of our cultures, and has propagated self-destructive and disempowering ideas to Africa's future leaders.

The mission of the SMT is simple: to use the power of popular culture, leveraged through parallel networks of youth activists and media outlets throughout Africa & the Diaspora, to present an empowering image of our "Sweet Mother" Africa, to challenge the pop-cultural status quo regarding African youth, and to connect young people to ongoing projects in the struggle to improve upon the lives of African peoples on the continent and in the Diaspora.

SMT, in collaboration with the Cultural Agents Intiative, will be hosting the first ever annual conference titled: Youth and the New Pan-African Renaissance: Rebuilding Africa for the 21st Century on April 7-9, 2006.
