Werewere Liking Gnepo

Werewere Liking Gnepo was born in Bondé, Cameroon, in 1950. Raised by her paternal grandparents in a traditional environment, she has lived in the Ivory Coast since 1978. Werewere Liking is, to a large extent, self-taught and has taken an active interest in all of the arts, including writing, painting, theatre and the cinema. Her work bears a close relationship with real life incorporating important moments from her life. Her literary career is based on the Ki-Yi Mbock initiary movement, which she describes as "A movement for the rebirth of African arts, for the birth of a contemporary Panafrican culture and for a coming together, and recognition, of the cultures of the black world." Altough, Werewere is a prolific author who has written in every genre, it is probably her work in theatre and in the Ki-Yi village community that has earned her an international reputation.
