The harvard University Committee on Human Rights Studies

The Harvard University Committee on Human Rights Studies was established as an interdisciplinary faculty committee under the auspices of the Provost to promote communication, coordination and collaboration among Harvard's many human rights initiatives. The Committee thus brings together Human Rights at Harvard. Over the last 50 years, human rights has moved from the periphery to center stage in contemporary geo-politics. The Committee seeks to expand knowledge and critical reflection about this rapidly evolving field. A system of transnational rules for regulating state behavior, but also a set of grassroots processes linking groups within and across societies, human rights increasingly affects major developments in political and social reality. These developments call for scholarly attention and inclusion in the academic curriculum.

Through its network of Harvard faculty drawn from a wide range of schools and disciplines, the University Committee develops proposals for human rights research, for curricular innovation, and for policy development at Harvard and among practitioners and scholars at large. The Committee’s website, Human Rights at Harvard, contains information about the many human rights scholars, programs, fellows and activities at the university. The Committee fosters research across academic disciplines and promotes collaboration between scholars and practitioners. It develops educational opportunities for undergraduates, stimulating curricular developments and supporting student research projects and summer internships. It promotes human rights scholarship amongst graduate and doctoral students and initiates human rights projects in collaboration with the human rights centers at the university. The Committee also organizes university wide public events, including lecture series, conferences, panels and workshops.
