James Kloppenberg

James T. Kloppenberg teaches courses on American and European intellectual and political history. His current research includes American and European democratic theory and practice since the 17th century and the relation between history and critical theory. His books include Uncertain Victory: Social Democracy and Progressivism in European and American Thought, 1870-1920 (Oxford, 1986) and The Virtues of Liberalism (Oxford, 1998). He has edited, with Richard Wightman Fox, A Companion to American Thought (Blackwell, 1995).

In 2008-2009, he is the Pitt Professor of American History and Institutions at the University of Cambridge.
