John Schrecker (Brandeis University)
John Schrecker is an historian of Modern China, focusing on Sino-Western relations and traditional Chinese social theory. He teaches at Brandeis University. In his work, he focuses on presenting material from the perspectives of East Asian history and East Asian social theory, rather than using Western models to interpret that material. He is currently working on a biography of Anson Burlingame, who was Lincoln's minister to China, and ultimately China's first envoy to the Western world. He has written Imperialism and Chinese Nationalism: Germany in Shantung (Harvard University Press, 1971), and he is preparing a second edition of The Chinese Revolution in Historical Perspective.
