Ernest May (Harvard University)

           

Ernest May has been on the faculty of the Harvard History Department since the 1950s. His research and scholarship have focused broadly on the history of international relations, and his subject matter has ranged from US foreign policy to intelligence in World War II. He teaches courses on U.S. international relations since the colonial era, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, and the uses of history in policy analysis. In 1986 he won the Gravemeyer Prize for Ideas Contributing to World Order for Thinking in Time: Uses of History for Decisionmakers which he co-authored with Richard E. Neustadt. He received the 2001 Distinguished Scholar Award from the American Historical Association.  His most recently completed project was as an advisor to the 9/11 Commission, for which he helped to write the final report.
