Martin Schongauer
German, c.1452-1491
The Death of the Virgin
Engraving
Gift of George and Wilhemina Batchelder
M23839
Copyright: President and Fellows of Harvard University
This wonderful impression of Schongauer's engraving, a recent gift, is not only one of the most complex and beautiful prints of the fifteenth century, it also directly influenced both Durer's and Rembrandt's compositions of the same scene, showing how prints, being multiples, could exert their influence far and wide in time and space.
