Physiographic Macroregions were first described in G. William Skinner's landmark essays in The City in Late Imperial China (1977). These regions follow the general pattern of major drainage basins and travel-constraining landscape features that largely structured the socioeconomic landscape of China prior to the advent of modern transportation. The Physiographic Macroregions published with CHGIS V4 were compiled at the Regional Systems Analysis Project (UC Davis) by G. William Skinner, Zumou Yue, and Mark Henderson.
