These maps were drafted by Joseph Rock in the United States, based on sketch maps drawn during numerous cartographic surveys which he undertook in Yunnan during the 1920s and 1930s. Although Rock was not a professional cartographer, the maps contain an incredible amount of detail, especially in terms of local placenames. The names found on the map are all printed in romanized form, and many, if not all of them, can be found by consulting Rock's detailed descriptions of his travels in The Ancient NaKhi Kingdom of Southwest China .
Each of the four maps have been scanned in three sections: top, middle, and bottom. There is some overlap on the adjacent sections of each map to compensate for loss of focus at the edges of the scans. The original scans were made at a resolution of 300 dpi, 3508x2482 pixels, with an average filesize=2.5MB. These were post-processed into two more sets of images: (1) medium sized images, 1000x708 pixels, average filesize=175KB; (2) small size images of 300x212 pixels, average filesize=16KB. Therefore each original map has nine scanned images.
The naming convention for the different filesizes of the images is as follows:
place_section_resolution
For example the filename for the middle section, 300dpi resolution image of Deqen is: "deqen_mid_300dpi.jpg" and it would be parsed as:
Also included are color scans of the entire map as a single image. These images are JPGs saved in the /color directory.
