For many of the funds listed, you must complete and submit a common application available at https://asperin.fas.harvard.edu/carat/. These grants are open to undergraduates who plan to enroll in a summer language program in the United States or abroad. Eligible languages include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese, though all East Asian languages will be considered. The grant will provide funding towards tuition, travel, and living expenses. Preference will be given those students whose concentrations either require or give credit for language study, or who plan a senior thesis project that makes use of the language to be studied. Recipients are required to submit upon their return, a copy of the certificate received upon completion of the program and a brief report on their experience. Reischauer Institute Undergraduate Summer Japanese Language Grants
These grants are awarded to Harvard undergraduates in any concentration who plan to enroll in a summer Japanese language study program in Japan. The grant will provide funding towards tuition, travel, and living expenses. Asia Center Undergraduate Summer Research Funds for China, Japan, Korea and South Asia
Asia Center funds for research in China, Japan, Korea and South Asia are distributed by the Fairbank Center, the Reischauer Institute, the Korea Institute and the South Asia Initiative, respectively. Students applying for funding for any of these countries should apply to the relevant centers and not to the Asia Center. Application deadline is February 27, 2009.
Dean’s Summer Research Awards

Rising seniors on financial aid who have obtained funding for their summer research (through HCRP or any other source) are encouraged to apply for the DSR. This award helps to cover a portion of the researcher’s financial aid summer savings requirement. The HCRP Committee reviews applications to the program at four times during the academic year. * Harvard College Research Program (Student Employment Office)
The Harvard College Research Program supports student-initiated scholarly research and creative endeavors undertaken with faculty guidance. All undergraduates may apply for HCRP funding, regardless of financial need. Seniors are not eligible for summer funding after they’ve graduated, and students on leave are not ordinarily eligible for term-time funding. The HCRP encourages scholarly exploration in the freshman and sophomore years along with the more focused endeavors of juniors and seniors. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated background or a proven interest in the subject area. This may include previous study or lab work, work experience or extra-curricular activities, or a bibliography developed with faculty guidance. Term time awards fall generally between $500 and $1000 a term, and summer awards are generally between $1000 and $2500. Please apply for other sources of funding if your plans require more than our standard award. Due dates for 2007-2008 HCRP and DSR applications are as follows: Fall: Wednesday, October 8, 2008; Spring: Friday, February 6, 2009; Summer: Wednesday, April 1, 2009. * Korea Institute Young-Chul Min Memorial Summer Travel Fellowships
The Korea Institute offers a limited number of travel grants for summer research and/or fieldwork in Korea. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Proposals from undergraduates must relate to a prospective senior honors thesis focused on Korea. Proposals from graduate students must relate to their doctoral or masters theses. Typically, the amount of the award is limited to the cost of travel in the research project; additional support for the cost of materials and other ancillary expenses also may be sought, but only in exceptional situations does the amount of the summer research award exceed $1,500. Applications in the two categories are considered separately. In the case of graduate students, moreover, priority is given to doctoral candidates. Grants are open to undergraduate concentrators and graduate degree candidates in all social sciences or humanities fields. Undergraduate applicants must have at least two years of Korean language training or equivalent proficiency in the language.
Reischauer Institute Undergraduate Summer Research Travel Grants and the Henry Rosovsky Undergraduate Summer Research Travel Grant
These grants are awarded to Harvard undergraduates in the humanities or social sciences to use in Japan for research and/or field work relating directly to a senior honors thesis in an area of Japanese studies. Grants up to $4,000. Application deadline is Friday, February 27, 2009.
South Asia Initiative Tata Undergraduate Study Grants
South Asia Initiative (SAI) Tata Study Grants are available to Harvard undergraduates across all disciplines for research or field work in South Asia. Grants are available only to students continuing at Harvard in the following academic year. Grantees may use their award any time during the academic year following receipt of the SAI grant. Korea Institute Undergraduate Internships
The Korea Institute offers a limited number of paid summer internships to Korea , such as the National Assembly and the Chosun Ilbo, Seoul , Korea. The internships include a stipend and airfare. Preference may be given to students with strong Korean language skills. Harvard College Japan Summer Internship Program (Reischauer Institute)
For Harvard undergraduates in any concentration to undertake a summer internship in Japan. Applicants are encouraged to arrange their own internship directly with a host organization in Japan. Those students who do not arrange their own internship must specify the type of internship they seek in as much detail as possible. The Reischauer Institute cannot guarantee placement. Preference will be given to students enrolled in Japanese language courses. Grants up to $5,000.

South Asia Initiative Service in India Summer Internships
The South Asia Initiative offers internship funding to Harvard undergraduates, for service in India during the summer of 2008. Funding covers airfare and basic room and board. Students are expected to set up their own internships. Upon return, students may write a related research paper for academic credit. Students with no background or experience in the Indian Subcontinent are encouraged to apply.

Weissman International Internship Program (Office of Career Services)
The Weissman International Internship Program was established by Paul (’52) and Harriet Weissman to help foster the development of Harvard College students’ understanding of the global community in which they will live and work. The program, administered through the International Experience Program (IEP) of the Office of Career Services, provides financial support for overseas internships arranged and proposed to the selection committee by sophomores and juniors of Harvard College. Applications are due at the Office of Career Services on Thursday, February 5, 2009, in the OCS Conference Room. Early submissions are welcome. South Asia Initiative Incentive Grant for Study in India
The South Asia Initiative is proud to announce a $10,000 Harvard undergraduate grant, for a term or an academic year of study in India, starting in academic year 2009-10. Applicants from all fields are welcome, but must have applied to enrol in a Harvard-approved program of study in India, as listed on the website of the Office of International Programs (www.fas.harvard.edu/~oip/). Actual award of the grant moneys will be conditional on receiving admission to the desired program.
Applicants should supply a CV, a statement explaining study plans, two academic recommendations, a transcript, and a writing/research sample, to Ian Jackson, South Asia Initiative, CGIS S427, 1730 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA 02138 (sainit@fas.harvard.edu).

Chinese Government Scholarships (Harvard Committee on General Scholarships)
Up to five full scholarships (including tuition, campus housing, health insurance, and a stipend) and ten partial scholarships (including tuition only) are offered for study or research at approximately 80 Chinese universities authorized to admit foreign scholarship students. Admission to the selected university for scholarship winners is arranged by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The scholarships are available for Harvard undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants must be citizens of the United States. Applications will be available in September from the Committee on General Scholarships. The application deadline for
the 2008-2009 academic year is December 7, 2007.

Harvard-Yenching Institute Student Exchange Fellowships
Harvard-Yenching Institute offers highly competitive fellowships for study abroad in China, Japan and Korea. The program is open to juniors wishing to spend a year abroad before entering their senior year and graduating seniors (although preference will be given to undergraduates.) Students will be placed according to their language ability and, if appropriate, they may attend other university courses in the local language. The partner universities are: Ewha University , Tokyo University , Fudan University, Nanjing University , Peking University, and Tsinghua University . The fellowships provide tuition, board and a small stipend. In addition, the Harvard-Yenching Institute provides a $2000 fellowship to cover roundtrip airfare and incidentals.

OIP Scholarships for Harvard Summer Study Abroad
The Office of International Programs, in conjunction with the Harvard Summer School and the Financial Aid Office, offers partial scholarships to support language study in Asia and enrollment in Harvard Summer School study abroad programs. Harvard College undergraduates in good standing are eligible to apply. Grant applications will be reviewed by the Office of International Programs and rated on the level of need and/or the relevance of the Harvard Summer School study abroad program to the student’s academic goals. Please note that this does not mean that a student’s concentration must relate directly to a program—for instance, one may be a scientist with a proven academic interest in a language or region. Freshmen who have not yet had a significant international experience are particularly encouraged to apply. Japan-America Student Conference (JASC)
