Undergraduate Grants and Opportunities

Included here are grants and fellowships available to students of Asian Studies and students wishing to pursue research or language study in Asia. For many of the funds listed, you must complete and submit a common application available at https://asperin.fas.harvard.edu/carat/. The deadline for the common application is Friday, February 12, 2010. Please follow the CARAT instructions carefully as they include all requirements and supplemental materials and submission instructions. Please contact Jorge Espada at jespada@fas.harvard.edu if you have any questions regarding the application. Award amounts generally range from $1,000 to $3,000, except as noted.

For grants not using the CARAT application, please inquire directly at each individual center for full application guidelines.

Please note that all undergraduate grants are subject to Harvard's policy precluding undergraduate travel to countries under a Department of State travel warning.

Undergraduate Grants and Fellowships

Language

Asia & Fairbank Center Undergraduate Summer Language Grants
These grants are open to undergraduates who plan to enroll in a summer language program in the United States or abroad. Eligible languages include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese, though all East Asian languages will be considered. The grant will provide funding towards tuition, travel, and living expenses. Preference will be given those students whose concentrations either require or give credit for language study, or who plan a senior thesis project that makes use of the language to be studied. Recipients are required to submit upon their return, a copy of the certificate received upon completion of the program and a brief report on their experience. Fung Foundation Scholarships for Summer Research, Study, and Work in China (Asia Center & Office of International Programs)
These grants for undergraduates of up to $5,000 ($6,000 for language) may be used for senior thesis research, language study, internships, and public service work in China over the summer. Recipients become Fung Scholars and are expected to participate in related events. Recipients are required to submit a brief report on their work over the summer and may be asked to participate in a public panel discussion upon their return. Reischauer Institute Undergraduate Summer Japanese Language Grants
These grants are awarded to Harvard undergraduates in any concentration who plan to enroll in a summer Japanese language study program in Japan. The grant will provide funding towards tuition, travel, and living expenses. Preference will be given to those students whose concentrations either require or give credit for language study, or who plan a senior thesis project that makes use of the language to be studied. Grants up to $6,000. Application deadline is February 12, 2010.

Research

Asia Center Undergraduate Summer Research Grants for Southeast Asia
These grants support undergraduate research during the summer in or relating to any country in Southeast Asia. Preference will be given to students whose research is directly related to a senior honors thesis. Grants will not exceed $3,000. Recipients are required to submit a brief report on their work over the summer and may be asked to participate in a public panel discussion upon their return. Asia Center Undergraduate Summer Research Funds for China, Japan, Korea and South Asia
Asia Center funds for research in China, Japan, Korea and South Asia are distributed by the Fairbank Center, the Reischauer Institute, the Korea Institute and the South Asia Initiative, respectively. Students applying for funding for any of these countries should apply to the relevant centers and not to the Asia Center. Application deadline is February 12, 2010.

David Rockefeller International Experience Grants (Office of International Programs)
The Office of International Programs is pleased to offer the David Rockefeller International Experience Grants program for undergraduates. The purpose of the grant is to afford all students the opportunity to take part in a significant international experience, regardless of financial constraints. A significant international experience (SIE) includes cultural immersion, and linguistic immersion whenever feasible and appropriate for the student’s goals and the location of the program or project (language preparation may be a pre-requisite). Dean’s Summer Research Awards (Student Employment Office)
Rising seniors on financial aid who have obtained funding for their summer research (through HCRP or any other source) are encouraged to apply for the DSR. This award helps to cover a portion of the researcher’s financial aid summer savings requirement. The HCRP Committee reviews applications to the program at four times during the academic year. Harvard College Research Program (Student Employment Office)
The Harvard College Research Program supports student-initiated scholarly research and creative endeavors undertaken with faculty guidance. All undergraduates may apply for HCRP funding, regardless of financial need. Seniors are not eligible for summer funding after they’ve graduated, and students on leave are not ordinarily eligible for term-time funding. The HCRP encourages scholarly exploration in the freshman and sophomore years along with the more focused endeavors of juniors and seniors. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated background or a proven interest in the subject area. This may include previous study or lab work, work experience or extra-curricular activities, or a bibliography developed with faculty guidance. Term time awards fall generally between $500 and $1000 a term, and summer awards are generally between $1000 and $2500. Korea Institute Summer Research Travel Grants
Korea Institute Undergraduate Summer Travel Grants are awarded to Harvard undergraduates in the humanities or social sciences to use in Korea for research and/or field work relating to a senior honors thesis in an area of Korean studies. Typically, the amount of the award is limited to the cost of travel in the research project. Undergraduate applicants must have at least two years of Korean language training or equivalent proficiency in the language. OIP Summer Awards
OIP Summer Awards provide funds to support undergraduate study, research and internships outside the US. Projects should be four weeks or more in duration, represent an immersion experience, and include a language study component whenever possible. OIP Summer Grants are supported by many funds. Some funding sources have particular academic foci, while others support activities in a geographic region like Africa, Asia or the Middle East. A wide range of international summer programs, research, or internship projects may qualify for an OIP Summer Grant. All undergraduates except graduating seniors are eligible to apply, and all students receiving OIP Summer Grants are required to submit reports on their experiences when they return to campus. Reischauer Institute Undergraduate Summer Research Travel Grants and the Henry Rosovsky Undergraduate Summer Research Travel Grant
These grants are awarded to Harvard undergraduates in the humanities or social sciences to use in Japan for research and/or field work relating directly to a senior honors thesis in an area of Japanese studies. Grants up to $4,000. Application deadline is Friday, February 12, 2010.

South Asia Initiative Undergraduate Study Grants
South Asia Initiative (SAI) Study Grants are available to Harvard undergraduates across all disciplines for research or field work in South Asia. Grants are available only to students continuing at Harvard in the following academic year. Internships and Volunteer Work

Korea Institute Summer Internships in Korea
This highly successful internship program will take place between June and August 2010 for a recommended period of 8-weeks. Students may combine a shorter internship with another program, such as a Harvard Summer School course, a language study program, summer thesis research, etc.  Applicants should indicate their interest in government, science/technology, media, NGO’s or the finance field along with their experience/skills. The Program cannot guarantee placement; acceptance is contingent on finding a fit between available positions and applicants. Undergraduate students from all years of study and all concentrations will be considered. Preference will be given to students with no prior exposure to Korean culture, first-time visitors to Korea and to returning students to Harvard. Korean language ability is not required by most intern hosts. Funding is available from a combination of OIP, OIP-Rockefeller and Korea Institute funds. You must apply to OIP as well, for the funding.Application deadline: February 12, 2010. Harvard College Japan Summer Internship Program (Reischauer Institute)
For Harvard undergraduates in any concentration to undertake a summer internship in Japan. Applicants are encouraged to arrange their own internship directly with a host organization in Japan. Those students who do not arrange their own internship must specify the type of internship they seek in as much detail as possible. The Reischauer Institute cannot guarantee placement. Preference will be given to students enrolled in Japanese language courses. Grants up to $5,000. For more information contact Dr. Theodore Gilman, Associate Director, Reischauer Institute.

South Asia Initiative Service in India Summer Internships
The South Asia Initiative offers internship funding to Harvard undergraduates, for service in India during the summer of 2008. Funding covers airfare and basic room and board. Students are expected to set up their own internships. Upon return, students may write a related research paper for academic credit. Students with no background or experience in the Indian Subcontinent are encouraged to apply. Weissman International Internship Program (Office of Career Services)
The Weissman International Internship Program was established by Paul (’52) and Harriet Weissman to help foster the development of Harvard College students’ understanding of the global community in which they will live and work. The program, administered through the International Experience Program (IEP) of the Office of Career Services, provides financial support for overseas internships arranged and proposed to the selection committee by sophomores and juniors of Harvard College. www.ocs.fas.harvard.edu/students/global/weissman/weissman.htm for more information.

Study Abroad

South Asia Initiative Incentive Grant for Study in India
The South Asia Initiative is proud to announce a $10,000 Harvard undergraduate grant, for a term or an academic year of study in India, starting in academic year 2009-10. Applicants from all fields are welcome, but must have applied to enrol in a Harvard-approved program of study in India, as listed on the website of the Office of International Programs (www.fas.harvard.edu/~oip/). Actual award of the grant moneys will be conditional on receiving admission to the desired program. Freeman-ASIA Award Program (Office of International Programs)
Please visit www.iie.org/programs/freeman-asia/ for more information. Harvard College applicants must be endorsed for the Freeman by the college through the Office of International Programs, therefore, students must submit their applications to OIP by the college deadline, which is listed on the funding sources Database for International Experience (www.funding.fas.harvard.edu).

Summer Tuition Waiver Scholarships at Select Korean Universities:

Korea Institute-Seoul National University Presidential Scholarship
Seoul National University provides two tuition waivers for undergraduate students to attend the SNU International Summer School (SNU ISI). The Korea Institute provides airfare. The student is responsible only for dorm, meal & living expenses. Seoul National University is one of Korea's foremost universities. Student Organization Grants

The Asia‐related centers at Harvard University offer grants to undergraduate and graduate student organizations for projects relating to individual countries or spanning multiple countries in Asia. These grants are offered on an ongoing basis; however, organizations are encouraged to apply as early as possible as funds are limited. To apply to any one or multiple centers, please use this form and submit it to Jorge Espada at jespada@fas.harvard.edu or CGIS South S118A. Please do not submit individual applications to each center. Please note that the Asia Center does not have funds for student organization grants for the 2009-2010 academic year but will still collect and distribute the common application for all of the Asia-related centers.

Noma-Reischauer Prizes in Japanese Studies
Noma-Reischauer Prizes in Japanese Studies awarded to students who write essays on Japan-related topics. One ($2,000) undergraduate and one ($3,000) graduate prize are awarded annually. PDF of application instructions. DEADLINE: Tuesday, JUNE 30, 2009, 5:00 pm to Reischauer Institute.

Japan-America Student Conference (JASC)
The Reischauer Institute will fund up to two conference fee awards ($3,000 each) to Harvard students who are selected by the JASC committee to participate in the Japan-America Student Conference in the summer of 2008. Students should apply directly to JASC (prior to their deadline) and inform the Reischauer Institute of their application.
