Faculty Grants

November 12, 2008

Dear Colleagues,

The Asia Center is pleased to announce that it is accepting proposals from Harvard University faculty in Asia–related fields.

The purpose of these grants is to promote Asian studies across the university and to stimulate interdisciplinary and inter-regional work and programs, particularly in the humanities and social sciences. Health and scientific projects with a significant social science or humanities component will also be considered. The preference is for inter-departmental and cross-school collaborations.

All applications must be led by one or more permanent members of the Harvard University faculty at the assistant, associate, or full professorial rank who will be continuing in that capacity at Harvard for the duration of the project, and who will personally take part in the activities sponsored by the grant. Visiting professors and scholars who will be at Harvard for the duration of the project may take part, but cannot be the primary applicant.

Funding is provided in part by the Office of the Provost in support of inter-faculty initiatives and by funds designated for projects in specific fields.

Applications are due on Friday, December 12, 2008 and may be for a one to three year period. A one-year extension for completion of the project will be considered, but unused funds must be returned at the end of the extension.

Funding is available for the following:

- Inter-disciplinary teaching and research projects that look across country boundaries in Asia.

- Seminar and speaker series relating to Asia.

- Inter-disciplinary teaching and research projects involving the U.S. and Asia.

- Grants to support the use of new technologies in teaching and research in Asian arts and
humanities.

- Inter-disciplinary teaching and research projects or conferences related to Japan.

- Research, teaching and outreach programs designed to improve understanding of critical issues
facing China, specifically: poverty; China’s role in modern Asia, in particular its relations with the
U.S. and Japan; cross-strait relations with Taiwan; and environmental issues.

- Faculty travel to Nanjing University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Open University of
Hong Kong or Lingnan University of Hong Kong for conferences or research.

Funding is limited to a maximum of $30,000 for workshops, conferences and course-related projects; a maximum of $15,000 for seminars and speakers series; and a maximum of $15,000 for individual research projects.

Proposals (ideally no more than five pages), including a detailed budget, should be submitted to Jorge Espada either at jespada@fas.harvard.edu or at CGIS South S118A, 1730 Cambridge St. Applicants will receive an email confirmation when their proposal is received and should contact the Asia Center if they do not receive this confirmation.

Candidates will be notified of decisions in mid-January. Should you wish to discuss the application process or the details of your proposal, please contact Deirdre Chetham, Executive Director of the Asia Center, at dchetham@fas.harvard.edu or (617) 496-6174.

Successful candidates will be expected to provide a short report at the end of the year for review by the Asia Center's executive committee summarizing the work made possible by this grant. A summary budget detailing the use of funds will also be required annually.

Sincerely,

Arthur Kleinman
Victor and William Fung Director of the Asia Center
