Faculty Grants

December 18, 2007

Dear Colleagues,

The Asia Center is pleased to announce that it is accepting proposals from Harvard University faculty in Asia–related fields for Spring 2008 and beyond.

The purpose of these grants is to promote Asian studies across the university and to stimulate
interdisciplinary and inter-regional work and programs, particularly in the humanities and social sciences. Medical and scientific projects with a significant social science or humanities component will also be considered. The preference is for inter-departmental and cross-school collaborations.

All applications must be led by one or more permanent members of the Harvard University faculty at the assistant, associate, or full professorial rank who will be continuing in that capacity at Harvard for the duration of the project, and who will personally take part in the activities sponsored by the grant. Visiting professors and scholars who will be at Harvard for the duration of the project may take part, but cannot be the primary applicant.

Funding will be provided in part by the offices of the President and the Provost, in support of inter-faculty initiatives and by funds designated for projects in specific fields. Additional funds are available for projects that support the use of new technologies in teaching and research in Asian arts and humanities; that foster cross-cultural and inter-disciplinary teaching and research involving the United States and Asia; or that involve travel to Nanjing University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Open University of Hong Kong or Lingnan University of Hong Kong.

Applications are due on Friday February 1, 2008 and may be for a one to three year period. A one-year extension for completion of the project will be considered, but unused funds must be returned at the end of the extension.

Submissions are sought in the following three categories:

1) Workshops, conferences and course-related projects (a maximum of $30,000). This is intended to support costs related to the development and implementation of new workshops and conferences, including travel, honoraria, and administrative expenses. Preference will be given to applications involving more than one department or school.

2) Seminars and speaker series (a maximum of $15,000). This is intended to support costs related to the development and implementation of seminars and speakers series, including travel, honoraria, and administrative expenses. This includes themed seminars that might develop into research projects or that are convened to discuss the results of research in progress.

3) Individual research grants (a maximum of $15,000). Funding will be available for the beginning and end stages of individual research projects and may be used for expenses such as travel and research assistance. Funds may not be used to cover expenses for publication or manuscript preparation, such as subventions or indexing.

Proposals (ideally no more than five pages), including a detailed budget, should be submitted to Jorge Espada either at jespada@fas.harvard.edu or at CGIS South S118A, 1730 Cambridge St. Applicants will receive an email confirmation when their proposal is received and should contact the Asia Center if they do not receive this confirmation.

Candidates will be notified of decisions in early March. Should you wish to discuss the application process or the details of your proposal, please contact Deirdre Chetham, Executive Director of the Asia Center, at dchetham@fas.harvard.edu or (617) 496-6174.

Successful candidates will be expected to provide a short report at the end of the year for review by the Asia Center's executive committee summarizing the work made possible by this grant. A summary budget detailing the use of funds will also be required annually.

Sincerely,

Tony Saich
Victor and William Fung Director of the Asia Center
