Anthropology brings a global comparative and very broad perspective to the study of human beings, exploring an enormous range of similarities and differences in time and space. The field is linked through its subdisciplines (i.e. Archaeology, Social Anthropology, Linguistic, Medical, Sensory Ethnography and Applied Anthropology) to many other fields in the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences.

At Harvard, the Anthropology Department is divided into two programs, each concerned with one of the main branches of Anthropology: Archaeology and Social Anthropology.

Location:
The Department of Anthropology is located in three buildings on the Harvard Campus.

The administrative offices for the Department are located in the Peabody Museum, 3rd floor.

The offices for the Undergraduate Program and the Graduate Program are located on the 3rd floor of William James Hall.

Most Archaeology Program faculty offices, classrooms, and labs are located in the Peabody Museum, on the 5th floor.

Most Social Anthropology Program faculty offices and classrooms are located in William James Hall, on the 3rd and 4th floors.

The Sensory Ethnography Lab and some classrooms and research offices are located in the Vanserg Building.
