Archaeology Wing Overview

Archaeologists in the Anthropology Department at Harvard are involved in a wide variety of research, ranging from the beginnings of modern human cultures in Africa and Eurasia, through the origins of agriculture, to the development and elaboration of urban societies in Asia and Latin America.

Course offerings in the Archaeology program reflect this diversity of interests and specializations. There are a number of special archaeological research and teaching facilities associated with the Archaeology Program that are housed in the Peabody Museum. These include the Archaeometry Lab, the Zooarchaeology Lab, and the Stone Age Lab; as well as a Geographic Information Systems Lab. There are also area-specific research spaces including the Near East Lab, the Mesoamerican Lab, and the American Archaeology Lab. In addition, there are the unparalleled collections of the Peabody Museum and of the Tozzer Library that provide invaluable resources for research. There are many opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to work closely with faculty and with members of the Peabody Museum staff.
