The doctoral program in the History of American Civilization at Harvard University was established in 1937. Its purpose is to provide its students with a broad but disciplined understanding of the history of American life. The work of the students is conducted under the direct guidance of a committee of members of the faculty representing several of the departments concerned with the various phases of the history of American civilization. Regularly represented on the committee are the Departments of African and African-American Studies, English and American Literature, Government, History, History of Art and Architecture, History of Science, Music, and Sociology. The committee also usually includes professors from the graduate schools of business, design, divinity, education, government and law.
