The Voice of America is a component of the Broadcasting Board of Governors. The VOA broadcasts news and information to millions throughout the world in more than 40 languages, via radio, television and the Internet. Our diverse, multicultural and dedicated professionals staff correspondent bureaus, transmission stations and marketing offices around the world in addition to our main offices in Washington, DC. This position is located in VOA’s Eurasia Division, Russian Service, with a duty location in Washington, DC.

The Incumbent serves as the Chief of the Russian Service within the Eurasia Division, having overall managerial, administrative and program responsibilities for daily TV and radio broadcasts, and development of materials for the Internet. Supervises a staff of broadcasters, producers and editors to produce blocks of TV and radio programming and to prepare materials for placement on the Service’s website. Provides editorial direction by selecting and approving subject matter to be covered in the TV and radio programs. Ensures Service staff produces high quality TV and radio programs by overseeing reporting assignments for staff to make sure appropriate coverage of events. Supervises assigned staff and has full editorial responsibility for directing the development and production of complex broadcast programming for radio, TV and the Internet. Plans and directs broadcast programming within the Russian Service by analyzing political, cultural and economic trends and developing programming concepts. Selects and approves program concepts, news story ideas, etc., for appropriateness of content, balance, and targeted area interest and develops presentation to ensure a balanced broadcast. Assigns staff members to cover events, edits completed radio, TV or internet scripts to ensure accuracy of tone, balance, and policy conformance, leads and supervises other broadcasters within the Russian Service in using broadcast journalism techniques and trains and guides other broadcasters in using those techniques.

Tutorial Fellow and University Lecturer (CUF) in Modern History (post 1800)

Oriel College and the University propose to appoint to the combined post of Tutorial Fellow and University Lecturer (CUF) in History from 1 October 2007, or as soon as possible thereafter. The starting salary will be between £37,642 and £50,589.

The person appointed will be required to have a high standard of research ability and a record of or high potential for successful teaching. Applications are welcome from candidates with active research interests in the history of eastern Europe (excluding the Soviet Union), or Central Asia, or the Islamic world in the 19th and 20th centuries, and who are able to teach beyond their specialist area.

The Fellow will be required to undertake eight hours of teaching a week averaged over the three eight-week terms for the college in relevant courses in History and its Joint Schools, and to give lectures and undertake graduate teaching and supervision for the Faculty. The combined College and University salary is on a scale up to £50,589 p.a. (under review), plus allowances.

ICT Specialist

The Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region (CeLCAR) at Indiana University invites applications for a full-time position of Information and Communications Technologies Specialist who will provide in-house assistance and expertise in a wide variety of technical issues facing the Center as it seeks to develop multimedia web-based language materials and offer language instruction and training by interactive television. The ICT specialist will report directly to the Director and will work closely with the Language Pedagogist in support of the development of web-based learning modules. Additionally, the ICT specialist will be expected to program in Flash, Action script 2 and 3, PHP, MySQL and XML and be current in the use of multimedia for instructional purposes, especially for language learning, thus the ICT specialist will have detailed knowledge of CALL methods and demonstrable experience in success in this area. The ICT specialist will be in charge of maintaining the Center’s extensive webpage and databases, including the digital database of authentic material. The ICT specialist will also be the chief in-house technical expert for digitizing and editing audio and video files for inclusion in Center projects. The ICT specialist will work closely with the Center staff (including part-time illustrators, multi media designers, etc.) to develop a distance education professional development portal. The ICT specialist will also advise the Director on ICT issues including hardware and software purchases and product design.

Language Pedagogist

The CeLCAR language pedagogist will be well versed in computer assisted language learning (CALL) as well as the development and delivery of web-based language learning materials. The language pedagogist must be familiar with issues facing learners and teachers of Less Commonly Taught Languages in general and how technology and relevant teaching methodologies can assist in the delivery of language instruction. The language pedagogist should be familiar with the Central Asian languages and it is preferred that s/he have detailed knowledge of at least one Central Asian language. The language pedagogist will serve as the in-house expert in a wide variety of issues relating to language pedagogy and materials development, including but not limited to the design of instructional material for intermediate and advanced levels in all skill groups and the design and delivery of training to instructors of Central Asian languages, both in Bloomington and via interactive television. The language pedagogist will help coordinate a major new initiation in the development of proficiency standards for Central Asian languages, therefore knowledge of existing assessment standards is expected. The language pedagogist will work closely with language developers for CeLCAR languages (Azeri, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Pashto, Tajiki, Turkmen, Uyghur, Uzbek) and assist them in the preparation of materials for interactive, multimedia modes. The language pedagogist will report directly to the CeLCAR director, but will work closely with the ICT specialist and the chief applied linguist. The language pedagogist will have at least a MA (Ph.D. preferred) in language education, linguistics, second language studies, or applied linguistics and will have second language/foreign language teaching experience.

Speaking and writing proficiency in Arabic, Persian or Turkish is desirable. Bibliographic knowledge of other relevant languages written in Arabic, Cyrillic or Roman script.

Curator of Soviet Nonconformist Art and Russian Art

The Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University seeks a curator for its internationally-renowned collection of mid-twentieth century Soviet Nonconformist art (with over 23,000 works the largest collection of its kind in the world) and for its collection of Russian art dating from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. The curator is responsible for carrying out and directing the active program of research, exhibitions, publications and acquisitions for the collections. In addition to the curator, the department of Soviet Nonconformist and Russian Art includes a research curator/associate professor of art history and up to six graduate students conducting research and assisting with departmental initiatives. The curator is responsible for directing the work of the department, dealing directly with donors, overseeing the department’s budget, and promoting the collections to colleagues and institutions in the U.S. and abroad.

Requirements: The successful candidate will have a minimum of a master’s degree in art history (Ph.D strongly preferred) with substantial museum experience in the area of Russian art from the mid-twentieth century to the present. A proven record of exhibitions and scholarship in this area is required, and a fluency in Russian is essential.
