American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies

NewsNet

NewsNet (ISSN 1074-3057), a newsmagazine of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies, is published five times a year, in January, March, May, August, and October, and includes information about the field of Slavic, Russian, Central European, and Eurasian studies and is distributed to all AAASS members.

Back issues of NewsNet, starting with the August 2006, v. 46, n. 4 issue, are now available in pdf on the AAASS Members Only site. You can also view January 2009 NewsNet as an example.

Call for Submissions

NewsNet cover articles are a forum for brief essays on contemporary issues or matters of broad professional interest to the Association’s membership. As such, they can include summary discussions of new research (for example, reports on well-attended and much-talked about sessions at the annual conference). But please keep in mind that NewsNet is not a venue for extensive research essays. Most cover articles run between 2,500 and 3,000 words in length (which can include endnotes), and should be submitted as files in Microsoft Word.

We heartily encourage members—including graduate students—who are interested in proposing a NewsNet cover article to contact Jolanta Davis (newsnet@fas.harvard.edu) or the Communications advisory committee’s chairperson, Michael Hickey (mhickey@bloomu.edu).

For more information about the Call for Submissions and the AAASS Communications Advisory Committee, please read "The AAASS Communications Advisory Committee: Bringing the Association's Communications Platforms into a New Era" which appeared in August 2009 NewsNet.

NewsNet Digital Archive

The entire backfile of NewsNet and the AAASS newsletter that preceded it, starting with the first issue published in 1961, is now available in database format from East View Information Services by subscription to institutions and individuals. The database is fully searchable and all materials will appear in PDF format. New issues will be added to the database as they are published. All NewsNets starting with the August 2006 are also available to AAASS members in the “Members Only” section of our web site for no additional charge.

The Association’s newsletter is, in a way, a record of key developments in the fields of Slavic and East European Studies over the last 45+ years and the database should be of great interest to scholars interested in the historiography of our field. The retrospective will enable users to follow trends, explore the foundations of current knowledge and track changing priorities in the field as reflected in AAASS annual conference agendas, papers, panels, and reports on research initiatives. Researchers may find evidence of the evolution of instructional programs, government grants, and the emphasis placed on particular topics of research.
