Academic Information
The teaching and research ventures of FAS encompass a vast
array of activities that are conducted by faculty, departments,
libraries, centers, museums, and students.
- Academic Departments, Standing Committees
The four divisions, over thirty departments and over forty
standing committees with curricular responsibilities provide
courses, instruction, and research programs to serve the
needs of FAS students and faculty.
- Degree Programs and
Concentrations
Degree programs are conducted under the rubric of the
College, GSAS, and DCE.
- Academic Courses
Approximately 1,500 different courses are offered by the
nearly 700 faculty members within the Faculty of Arts and
Sciences.

Libraries
Harvard College Library is the major component of the
University Library and consists of 11 major units, including
the Harry Elkins Widner Memorial Library in Harvard Yard.
Nearly 50 additional libraries exist in academic departments,
institutes and undergraduate Houses.
- Centers and Institutes
FAS has many academic and administrative groupings of varied
size and standing under whose auspices most educational,
research and service activities occur.
