Harvard University's Molecular and Cellular Biology-Howard Hughes Medical Institute Outreach Program will welcome 120 Cambridge schoolchildren on Thursday, Jan. 8 for a day of hands-on science lessons titled, "From T. Rex to Tissues: 65 Million Years of Biology in the Making." The students will also tour the Harvard Museum of Natural History.
The first- through sixth-graders will participate in demonstrations on paleontol-ogy and cell biology led by graduate and postdoctoral students. Younger stu-dents will learn about life as a paleontologist, how to make fossil imprints and how to conduct a paleontological dig. Fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders will use microscopes to examine tiny live organisms and cells from the lining of their own mouths.
The event is co-sponsored by Harvard ExperiMentors, an undergraduate group that pairs Harvard students with Cambridge elementary schools classes for weekly science lessons, and Harvard's Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. For many years, MCB has offered outreach programs for biology teachers, high school students and others to share the latest research discoveries, foster excitement about science and encourage students to continue studies in biology.
