College Appoints New Assistant Dean
Focus on Extracurricular and Social Opportunities
Cambridge, Mass. - September 23, 2003 - Paul J. McLoughlin II, has been named assistant dean of Harvard College, with a focus on extracurricular and social opportunities for undergraduate students. His appointment will be effective on Oct. 6, 2003. He will report to Judith Kidd, acting associate dean of Harvard College.
In this newly created position, McLoughlin will be a visible figure on campus, meeting with students where they live, work and socialize, Kidd said. "I am very excited to have Paul join our team. In addition to his enthusiasm and energy, he brings to the position a strong background in working with students on a variety of issues. He will be a full partner in everything that happens in our office, advising and leading us on many of the projects we know are important to students. Paul and I are committed to making the Office of Student Activities a place where new ideas are encouraged as well as the place where existing programs are supported," Kidd said.
Kidd said she worked closely with Harvard College Dean Benedict Gross to develop the new position and its duties. "I am delighted with the keen interest Dean Gross has shown in this and other initiatives related to student extracurricular and social activities," Kidd said. "He was not only supportive, but he agrees that the Office of Student Activities is extremely important as we pursue new and creative ways to continue to improve the quality of life for undergraduates."
Kidd said McLoughlin will actively reach out to student groups to help them manage resources and develop programs. Working with student groups and Kidd, he will also manage and make recommendations for the allocation of student office space, develop publications for student organizations, and actively help supervise finances of student organizations. In addition, he will help students to understand and implement college rules and regulations related to student activities and organizations, and recommend changes where necessary.
From academic and career advising, to admissions and residential life McLoughlin has worked in almost every area of student life and support. In his current role as assistant director for health and medical careers in Harvard's Office of Career Services, he advises undergraduate students and alumni/ae interested in careers in health and medicine. In so doing, he not only works closely with students, but with prospective employers to identify jobs, internships and volunteer opportunities. He is also a freshman proctor.
Prior to coming to Harvard in 2001, McLoughlin was chief pre-health professions advisor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida (1999-2001). Among his many duties in that position, he advised undergraduate students in pre-medical and health related areas on preparation, application process, and professional school requirements. Also, while there, he taught ethics through the University Honors Program.
McLoughlin was the assistant coordinator of prevention, outreach, and education in the University of Vermont's Center for Health and Wellbeing from August 1997 until May 1999. While there, he was also content editor for The Vermont Connection Student Affairs Journal. Prior to that, he was a head resident and orientation leader for the Office of New Student Programs at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Further, he has worked as an intern in admissions at Middlebury College, and in student affairs at the University of Vermont, as well as at Trinity College of Vermont.
McLoughlin has a B.A. degree in zoology from Miami University, and an M.Ed. in higher education and student affairs administration from the University of Vermont.
