Collections

The Mineralogical and Geological Museum hold vast geological collections that have been assembled since the late eighteenth century. They are a legacy of vigorous research and teaching in various fields of geology including mineralogy, petrology, and mining geology.

Although fossils are critically important geological specimens, at Harvard they are housed with the biological collections. Fossil plants are held by the Botanical Museum and fossil animals are held by the Museum of Comparative Zoology.
Many of the finest specimens in the mineral and meteorite collections are exhibited in the Harvard Museum of Natural History (HMNH). The majority of the rocks, minerals and ores are used for teaching and research purposes. No museum role was ever envisioned for them.
