Secondary field in Romance languages & literatures
The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures provides students many opportunities to discover, critically evaluate and enjoy the richness and diversity of the Romance languages and their literary traditions, from both the past and the present. We welcome beginning as well as advanced students to explore the offerings of our department in pursuit of a secondary field in RLL.
The secondary field in Romance Languages and Literatures offers students four options, one in each of our major areas of study (French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese). Each of these options requires 5 half-courses. The requirements for the four options are symmetrical, except that in Italian and Portuguese two advanced language courses may count instead of one, as is the case in French and Spanish. This difference recognizes that students in Italian and Portuguese are more likely to have started their language study in college.
Our requirements impose limits on the level of the courses taken but not on the topics students may study. Students can choose courses that concentrate on a certain period, genre, or cultural issue. . In this spirit of flexibility, the requirements can include a course in a related field offered in another program or department (e.g., a course on the history of Latin America or on Italian Renaissance art). Since we encourage our students to study abroad, we will also consider courses taken abroad as counting toward the secondary field. Courses taken at the Harvard Summer School may also count. For these three options (a course in a related field, courses taken abroad, courses taken at Harvard Summer School) students will need their RLL adviser’s approval.
No independent studies course (or supervised reading and research) may count for the secondary field.
Students who plan to do a secondary field in Romance Languages and Literatures are required to meet once with an RLL adviser for an advising session before they have taken all their half-courses. The Undergraduate Adviser in the language chosen must sign the final form for secondary field credit.
