Language Program

Torre Europa in Madrid, Spain
The Department of Romance Language and Literatures offers language courses in French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. There is also a limited Catalan offering. In all four major languages, our courses have substantive content related to all aspects of culture, including literature, enhancing the intellectual experience of learning a language. The high enrollments in French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese allow us to provide variety at all levels, so that students can find courses corresponding to their interests. In our fifth language, Catalan, we have a first-year sequence, and students can pursue their Catalan study further through special arrangement. Please consult the course descriptions for Catalan, French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, along with the individual course web pages to obtain more detailed information. Be sure to peruse the link bar at left, which also contains important related documents.

Sectioning for Romance language courses

To choose a section for a lettered or numbered language course (numbers 60 and under) in French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, students should fill out an online sectioning form on the respective course webpages. (Please see the table above or the course catalog.)
Once students have filled out and submitted the form, they will recieve notification of the date, time, and location of the first class meeting by email.

Note that most French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish Language courses will have their first meeting on Wednesday, September 19, or Thursday, September 20, depending on the course schedule. Exceptions will be listed on individual course web pages. The same sectioning procedures will be followed for the spring semester, 2008.

Language tables

Check out the Language Tables hosted by individual Houses. These are an excellent way to keep up your language skills outside of class. You can share a meal and speak without fear of making mistakes.
