Graduate Students

Reischauer Institute Postdoctoral Fellowships in Japanese Studies for 2008-09 supports recent PhDs of exceptional promise while they revise their dissertations for publication. Applicants must have received the PhD degree in 2003 or later, in Japanese studies in any area of the humanities or social sciences. Those who are chosen to receive fellowships must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. degree by July 1, 2008. Fellowship includes $44,000 stipend, health insurance for grantee, research/travel funds, and support for workshops.

Reischauer Institute Supplementary/Completion Dissertation Grants provides limited support to Harvard doctoral candidates in the dissertation research and writing stage in any field of Japanese studies in the humanities or social sciences. (Grants up to $20,000. Students may receive a grant in each of these two categories only once.)

Reischauer Institute Summer Research Grants for Graduate Students supports Harvard graduate students in the humanities or social sciences whose work is focused on Japan. In addition to doctoral candidates, continuing students in Harvard Masters programs will be considered, as will graduating Harvard Masters students who will enter a Harvard Ph.D. program in the following year. Awards are normally for summer research travel from Harvard to Japan, and return. (Grants up to $4,000.)

Reischauer Institute Summer Language Study Grants for Doctoral Students supports Ph.D. candidates in the humanities or social sciences for language study, directly related to a doctoral dissertation in Japanese studies, which cannot be conveniently pursued during the academic year. Students not primarily pursuing Japanese studies who require Japanese language training will also be considered to the extent funds are available. (Grants up to $5,000.)

Graduate Summer Language Grants for East, South and Southeast Asian Language Study (Harvard University Asia Center, the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, the Korea Institute, and the Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies)
These grants are for students enrolled in a master's or doctoral program at Harvard in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences or any of its professional schools for study during the summer of an East Asian language (including the Altaic languages), or of one of the languages of South or Southeast Asia. Study should take place at accredited programs outside of the United States, but exceptions may be made when this is not possible. Priority will be given to advanced study in a primary language, to the study of a secondary language that is necessary for the completion of the degree, or to the study of a secondary language that is necessary for advanced research. Grants will normally not exceed $6,000. Students are encouraged to budget realistically and, when appropriate, to seek support from other sources, which may be combined with GSLG funds. Students seeking support for the study of South Asian languages should also consult the grant programs offered by the South Asia Initiative.

Reischauer Institute Dissertation Production Grants to help cover word-processing, binding, or other costs for the final draft of the dissertation are available to qualified Harvard doctoral candidates in the field of Japanese studies (maximum $500).
Application deadlines: October 1 for November degree; February 1 for March degree; May 1 for June degree.

 

Reischauer Institute Conference Attendance Grants for Harvard graduate students in the field of Japanese studies in the humanities or social sciences to help defray cost of travel, registration fees and other expenses incurred during attendance at scholarly conferences where they present papers or serve as panel discussants (up to $800).
Application deadline: at least one month in advance of the conference.

 

Noma-Reischauer Prizes in Japanese Studies is awarded to Harvard students who write essays on Japan-related topics. One ($2,000) undergraduate and one ($3,000) graduate prize are awarded annually. PDF of application instructions.

Japan-America Student Conference (JASC) Fee Awards
The Reischauer Institute will fund up to two conference fee awards ($3,000 each) to Harvard students who are selected by the JASC committee to participate in the Japan-America Student Conference in the summer of 2008. Students should apply directly to JASC (prior to their FEBRUARY 8, 2008 deadline) and inform the Reischauer Institute of their application.

Reischauer Institute Student Organization Grants
Grants for Harvard undergraduate and graduate student groups are available to support activities relating to Japanese studies. Please submit a proposal with detailed budget to Dr. Theodore Gilman, Associate Director.
