Commitment of Faculty Effort on Sponsored Projects
Although the Faculty of Arts and Sciences welcomes external funding from sponsors, it pays the full academic-year salaries of faculty members to insulate their teaching and research from external constraints. Specific commitments of effort in proposals and budgets for federally funded projects constrain faculty members. Members must account in detail for their committed effort, and the Faculty must cover the associated indirect costs. When "cost-sharing" is not mandated, faculty members should describe their intended contribution to a project without making a specific commitment that must be documented. See:
- Memorandum from Dean Jeremy R. Knowles, 23 July 2001 and
- Procedures regarding commitment of faculty effort, which provides some guidance for investigators preparing proposals, some suggested language, and some agency-specific information
