STUDY ABROAD FOR CONCENTRATORS IN GOVERNMENT
Contact: Director of Undergraduate Studies
Timothy Colton, tcolton@fas, 5-4345
Study abroad can be a fruitful component of liberal education in general, and it can contribute in
important ways to the study of politics in particular. For this reason, the Government Department works hard to
support its concentrators in studying abroad.
The process of approving the study abroad petition requires concentrators to meet with the Assistant Director of Undergraduate
Studies (ADUS) for advance approval of courses that will count toward the concentration. The ADUS will generally approve political
science courses for which the college grants course credit, but you will need to provide a catalogue description of each course
for which you wish to receive concentration credit. Courses taken in the stipulated related fields will also count toward the
concentration requirements, but courses taken to fulfill the junior seminar requirement (for honors track students) must be taken at
Harvard. Once abroad, students sometimes need to change their course selection. If you find yourself in this situation, you should
email the Office of International Programs and the ADUS for concentration approval.
Most Government concentrators who study abroad go during their junior year. If you plan to be away for all or part of
your junior year and you wish to write a senior thesis, you should talk with your concentration advisor or the ADUS
about your plans. Studying abroad will not stand in the way of your senior thesis (for some students it enhances
the thesis), but you will need to be on top of things early on to ensure that all goes smoothly. For instance, if you
plan to be away during the spring term of your junior year, you should try to identify a thesis advisor before you
leave, since many potential advisors will be otherwise committed by the time you return to campus. Your concentration
advisor and the ADUS can work with you to develop a strategy that integrates your study abroad experience into
your plan of study within the department, including your plans for a thesis.
