Silk Road Project at Harvard University
A show by China Magpie, a Chinese rock quartet, three of whose members are part of the Silk Road Ensemble, will be one of the highlights during the Silk Road Project’s Harvard University residency October 16-19. Interacting with undergraduate musicians and dancers, members of the Silk Road Ensemble will explore traditional and contemporary forms of Chinese music within a cross-cultural context. The five-year affiliation between Silk Road, a nonprofit founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma '76 in 1998, and Harvard University is now in its second year.
Led by Laura Freid, Executive Director and CEO, the Silk Road Project promotes a sense of community among institutions, artists and audiences whose imaginations are sparked by the symbolism of the ancient pathway. The Project’s affiliation with Harvard was launched in September 2005 as a partnership with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). The initiative is an affiliate program of the Office for the Arts and the Department of Music, which serve as the FAS hosts to the Project and assist in the development of its wide-ranging artistic and educational scope at the University.
